Jubilee is an old word with significant meaning for today.

It comes from early in the story of the Bible. In this story, God announces to his people that every 50 years they are to free the Israelite slaves they own and forgive any Israelite debts owed to them.

This was a radical social vision and it revealed what God thinks the world should look like.

Later in the story of the bible, the prophet Isaiah writes that one day someone would be born who would announce a new Jubilee—a vision of Holistic Transformation. This renewed Jubilee would announce that social justice was coming to the world. However, it would go further and deeper, offering freedom at the level of the human heart. Jubilee offers us new lives and a new world.

In the New Testament, Jesus announces this new Jubilee and inaugurates it through his own life, death and resurrection. Jesus makes it possible to receive authentic lives of freedom now while joining God in bringing this spirit of Jubilee to our city and world.

This is what we’re about—this ancient vision lived out in our day.

Jesus is the Jubilee.
